The UK government is increasingly utilising AI and advanced technology to improve public services, particularly in speeding up planning approvals, and decision-making processes. A key example is the use of AI and satellite imagery to monitor and predict changes in England's natural habitats. This innovative approach is designed to accelerate planning decisions while also addressing local opposition ("NIMBYism") that often delays development.

Natural England's ‘Living England’ project uses machine learning and satellite data to create a comprehensive, up-to-date map of habitats. This represents a significant improvement over traditional manual surveys, enabling faster and more informed planning decisions while prioritising environmental protection. The technology allows for quicker approvals for housing and infrastructure projects without compromising ecological considerations.

This initiative coincides with the release of the AI Playbook, a guide for public sector tech experts on implementing similar AI-driven solutions to help to improve services. The Playbook outlines ten guiding principles, including human oversight, appropriate tool selection, collaboration with AI companies, and transparency in AI usage and its benefits across the public sector.

Beyond planning, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is also using AI to prioritise MOT inspections, by analysing data and identifying anomalies, the DVSA can target inspections more effectively, improving both efficiency and road safety.

These efforts are part of the UK's broader strategy to transform public services through AI, as outlined in the Plan for Change. Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle explained AI's potential to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve services, contributing to the UK's ambition to become a global AI leader and attract investment.
