The Smart Machines 2035 Strategy is an ambitious plan designed to position the UK as a global leader in robotics and smart technology. By 2035, these machines, which already play vital roles in transport, warehouses, and manufacturing, will become even more integral to our daily lives. Their applications will span across hospitals, transport systems, environmental protection, and various tasks at home and work.
The 10-year strategy builds on the UK's strengths in research, innovation, and business. It sets out clear goals and steps to ensure widespread adoption of smart machines, aiming to boost productivity, create jobs, and enhance safety and efficiency. If fully embraced, these smart machines could contribute up to GBP 150 billion to the UK economy by 2035.
Lord Patrick Vallance, Minister of State for Science, Research, and Innovation, expressed his support for the strategy in a letter to David Lane and Paul Clarke, leaders of the Robotics Growth Partnership. The Partnership, which was established in 2019, is an independent group that advises on keeping the UK at the forefront of robotics. Their mission is to foster innovation, support new businesses, and ensure that the UK remains competitive with global leaders like the US and China.
To make this vision a reality, the strategy focuses on:
Encouraging Demand – Promoting the integration of smart machines into public services, businesses, and infrastructure, while ensuring they are trusted and safe.
Building a Strong Supply – Supporting the growth of UK businesses, investing in skills, and transforming the UK into a global hub for smart machine development.
Key actions include the creation of an Office for Smart Machines to guide public investment, the establishment of regional innovation hubs, the enhancement of regulations, and investment in research, education, and funding for smart machine startups.
If successful, this strategy will not only drive economic growth but also improve quality of life, sustainability, and national security, ensuring the UK leads the way in the smart machine revolution.
